Welcome to Tennis BC's Rogers Ranking Page Tennis BC’s Ranking System is changing in 2008 to reflect feedback from players and tournament directors. Our goal is to have the system reflect the relative merit of all players in the system. The main change is that instead of basing a player’s ranking on the total number of points accumulated during the year, the ranking will be more closely tied be to the player’s usual tournament performance, weighted for participation. Base Point Awards The points awarded for a player’s progress in a tournament have not changed. When you play in a sanctioned event, you earn base points according to how far you progress in the draw. The table below illustrates the base points available for draws of various sizes. You can see that a player who progresses to the quarter final of a draw of 64 will receive 140 base points.
With the use of playoffs for third and fourth place and some other draw formats such as full feed-in and round-robins we are able to dertermine finish position with more granularity. In these cases, the point awards are slightly more detailed.
Actual Point Awards Tennis BC awards a specific rating level to every tournament. This is done to recognize a generally higher or lower level of play in some tournaments. When you play in a tournament, your base points are multiplied by the tournament’s rating. So you can see that if a player were to earn 140 base points at a Summer Series event, they would actually receive 1.5 x 140 = 210 points.
Ranking Points In the past, rankings were based on the accumulation of a player’s best points from an allocated number of tournaments. This model rewarded quantity of events played over quality of results achieved. To strengthen the accuracy of rankings, an updated formula for computing ranking points will be initiated for 2008. The rating is based on the player’s usual performance (average points per tournament) multiplied by a participation factor.
NEW FORMULA for Rankings Points Rankings Points = TotalPoints / Tourneys Played * Participation Factor Eligibility - NTRP Eligibility for NTRP events is primarily based on a player’s self-evaluation of their own playing level. A description of the NTRP playing levels is provided on the Tennis BC website at www.tennisbc.org under "Play Tennis Self-Rating Guide". It has been known to happen that a player inadvertently enters an event at the wrong level. It is for this eventuality that the Tournament Committee reserves the right to place players in their appropriate category prior to the tournament and the right to remove a player from an event if it becomes clearly apparent that the player is in the wrong level. Juniors holding a Champs or Challengers ranking or any players with a 5.0+ ranking are ineligible to participate in the 3.5 and 3.0 divisions. A player winning a Summer Series event or a Stanley Park event in a 4.5, 4.0, 3.5, or 3.0 singles or doubles category during the calendar year, or who finishes the year ranked in the top five (5) men or top three (3) women in a category is ineligible to play in that category for the following calendar year. They are instead required to move up to the next highest NTRP category. Players winning a Summer Series Event in 4.5, 4.0, 3.5 or 3.0 in either singles or doubles can continue to compete in that level for the balance of the current calendar year. Ineligibility for singles at a given level does not imply ineligibility for doubles at that level and vice versa. Eligibility – Juniors Junior players must not have reached their 18th, 16th, 14th, 12th or 10th birthday respectively before January 1st of the current calendar year. Out of province players are not eligible to play in National Qualifying Events. Eligibility – Seniors To play in a given age category, a player must reach that age by year end. So, a person turning 55 on Dec 31, 2008 is eligible to play in the 55+ age category throughout 2008. |
